Early engines used O-rings (also called packing rings or toric joints) as seals (first patented in 1896). These are just mechanical gaskets in the shape of a torus (a circular ring--like a lifesaver), seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts. It creates a seal at the interface. However, O-rings require a fluid film to lubricate them. They have limited usefulness in vacuum application and at extremes of temperature. The modern oil seal represents a significant improvement over the simple O-ring because it effectively seals in lubrication and prevents contamination from outside under a wide range of pressures and temperatures.

Oil seals are available in an immense range of sizes, for shafts from a few millimetres to several metres. Once the shaft diameter, groove diameter (housing diameter) and groove width are known, selecting an appropriate oil seal is a simple task. An oil seal or its product description is usually associated with three dimensions, for example 6x15x4. These refer to the sizes of the hardware for which the oil seal is designed. In this example, this oil seal is suitable for: 6-mm shaft diameter x 15-mm groove diameter x 4-mm minimum groove width.
Nitrile is the most widely used rubber (elastomer) and it’s recommended as the best for almost all standard applications. This is solely due to the fact that nitrile has some intrinsic properties, such as low cost and compatibility with most environments. Some of the general applications of nitrile are non-latex gloves, automotive transmission belts, footwear, gaskets, synthetic leather, hoses, o-rings, and oil seals.
Oil seals increasingly had to meet higher requirements, which is why PTFE was developed in 1980. This variant can better withstand higher engine speeds, higher oil temperatures, longer oil intervals and modern lubricants. In addition, the oil seal contains a wider contact surface, which ensures less wear.
They are best known for their bright light emission that is far reaching. Their tungsten is encased in a quartz tube filled with xenon gas. They may require more power when turned on but use much less of it to maintain brightness. Moreover, they have a longer lifespan compared to the halogens. They may seem better but they also present some limitations such as being more expensive as far as manufacturing and replacement is concerned. They are not easy to manufacture from their complex design. Their bright light cause a blinding effect to oncoming traffic which is undesirable and can cause dangers on roads.
